A CLASSROOM FOR KIDS APPEAL []

Opening Ceremony

Northern Marine Management in cooperation with Stena Bulk have donated two classrooms in Jacobo High School in Biñan, Laguna, Phillipines in support of the basic education agenda of President Gloria Macapagal Arroyo.

Construction will commence on June 15, 2007 and completion is estimated between 30-45 days through the local contractor Federation of Filipino-Chinese Chamber of Commerce and Industry, Inc.

Shore and sea staffs are also involved in the project with their donations intended for the classroom equipment and materials. As of May 31, 2007, the total donations from the vessel crew amounted to £3,000 which will be spent on the purchase of chairs, blackboards, computers and other facilities.

The "Classroom, Galing sa Mamamayang Pilipino Abroad" (CGMA) project is one of the priorities of the Department of Labor and Employment in support of the basic education agenda of President Gloria Macapagal Arroyo.

This donate-a-classroom project targets building 10,000 classrooms in elementary and secondary public schools with a critical shortage nationwide, through donations from overseas Filipino communities, foreign employers, local private companies, civic organizations and individuals.

Among the donor vessels are CSO Deep Blue under Capt. Richard Bradbury, CSO Deep Pioneer under Capt. Doug Shannon, CSO Apache under Capt. Julian Osman, and a number of vacationing Filipino Seafarers from Northern Marine Management’s varied fleet.

Apart from the two classrooms that will be constructed, both will be equipped with armchairs for fifty students, desk and chair for the teacher, classroom blackboards and electric ceiling fans.

The school will likewise be provided with a computer equipped with broadband internet connection that will establish a link with Northern Marine Management, its vessels and seafarers and help the school optimise its access to external educational support.

The donation affirms NMM and Stena Bulk’s commitment to the training and education not only of its Filipino seafarers but the Filipino youth as well.

If you wish to know more about this project or make a donation you can email climcaoco@ptc.com.ph or wilfredo.ambagana@stena.com

GULF MARINE MANAGEMENT SENIOR OFFICERS SEMINAR []

The last week in June was the agreed date for the Gulf Marine Management Senior Officers’ Seminar to be held in their Offices in Athens.

15 Senior Officers from the “Glory” Fleet, many accompanied by their wives or partners, along with senior management from NMM in Clydebank and Hamburg and GMM attended to discuss topics of general interest and application to the operation of the fleet.

Unfortunately the weather which is usually very pleasant at this time of year turned distinctly different from Western Europe (where heavy rain was causing floods) with a heatwave and temperatures rising into the mid forties!

Despite the extreme heat the Seminar was a great success in all aspects and didn’t even deter the wives from visiting the Acropolis!

It can perhaps be best summed up in the words of one attendee in his feedback sheet as follows:

“Both GMM and NMM very well represented. All presentations well balanced and informative. The long term commitment to quality ships, operations and personnel was put across well and effectively. Invitation and inclusion of wives very much appreciated and worthwhile, this reinforced the full commitment of both GMM and NMM to Sea Staff.!”

We couldn’t have asked for better…

A presentation on commercial operation is discussed.

MONT VENTOUX DELIVERS TRAMS TO THE CITY OF TUNIS []

“Mont Ventoux” departing Marseille

As one of the main trading routes between North Africa and Europe the roro vessels operating between Marseille and Tunis can be called upon to carry some very unusual cargo.

Recently the Stena RoRo vessel “Mont Ventoux” commenced delivering tramways to the City of Tunis for their new urban tramlink between Tunis and the nearby town of Ben Arous. The trams are new units manufactured in France by Alstom who will deliver a total of 30 trams to Transtu (the operating company for the Tunis tram network). Approximately 3 units will be delivered each month via the “Mont Ventoux”. The trams will enter commercial service in July 2007.

The units represent new challenges to the charterer CMA-CGM and the vessel to ensure that these high value cargo units are delivered in pristine condition.

Each tram with its specialised transport unit is 47.6 metres long and weighs 96.5 metric tonnes.

The stern ramp requires to be horizontal (+/-2 degrees inclination) in order for the units to be safely loaded onboard and discharged. The configuration of the Mont Ventoux’s stern ramp and draught (relative to the quay heights in Marseille and Tunis) fulfils this requirement.

So the next time you visit Tunis and step onto a tram, remember how it got there!

GREEN PASSPORT FOR STENA SEATRADER []

On 6th of March 2007 our managed vessel Stena Seatrader has obtained a Green Passport in compliance with the International Maritime Organization’s (IMO) Guidelines on Ship Recycling.

The Green Passport, as defined by the IMO guidelines, is a document which contains an inventory of all the materials onboard a ship which may be hazardous to human health or to the environment which should accompany the ship throughout its operational life. The Green Passport is to be passed by the owner to the ship recycling yard at the end of the ship’s life, to enable the yard to formulate a safe and environmentally sound way of breaking the ship.

The process of obtaining the Green Passport has taken just over four months and included a detailed survey of the vessel by a contracted Danish company COWI A/S. During the survey a large number of material samples have been gathered throughout the vessel and analysed in laboratory. The findings have been recorded in a special report and also a designated electronic database has been created for the purpose of recording the location and amounts of the hazardous materials carried on board. The database is to be kept up to date by the vessel Owners/Managers and to be passed on to the breaking yard at the end of the ship’s life.

Green Passport Statement of Compliance

Considering the effort involved, the Green Passport for Stena Seatrader has been a tremendous achievement to STENA and NMM and we intend to continue our commitment to preserving the environment and to observing best practice in this area of ship operations.
